Hydraulic elevator update
The Department of Labor and Industry adopted the ASME A17.3-2015 edition of the Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators on Sept. 29, 2020.
Hydraulic Elevators section 4.7.7 provides a direct reference to section 3.10 requiring compliance with certain control and operating circuit requirements for electric elevators.
Recently, an error has been noted in section 4.7.7. The published version of ASME A17.3-2015 4.7.7 references a section reserved for future use 3.10.11 where it should have referenced 3.10.12. This typographical error essentially eliminates the direct reference for hydraulic elevators to comply with a System to Monitor and Prevent Automatic Operation of the Elevator with Faulty Door Contact Circuits in section 3.10.12.
Because this section was published correctly in draft versions of ASME A17.3 2015 and made permanent in the 2017 edition, we are confident the intent of this code section was to require door lock monitoring on hydraulic elevators.
However, pending clarification by ASME to correct the apparent reference error, DLI elevator inspectors will suspend issuing orders for compliance to this code section for hydraulic elevators at this time. If ASME issues an errata or interpretation to clarify the reference in section 4.7.7 or a later edition of A17.3 is adopted enforcement of this code section will resume.
While DLI believes this is an important safety issue and is strongly recommending hydraulic elevators include door lock monitoring at this time, you may choose to delay compliance if your hydraulic elevator has been cited for this requirement until you are notified differently.
